What is decarbonization?
Decarbonization is the process by which the average amount of carbon in primary energy reduces over a period. This effect is caused by the increased use of fuels with low carbon content as compared to the reduced use of fuels with high carbon content.
The decarbonization in the electricity sector means reducing the carbon intensity of the emissions per each unit of electricity which is generated. It is merely the removal or extraction of carbon dioxide from the energy sources. In addition, decarbonization can be defined as the process of reducing GHG gas (greenhouse gas) emissions which occur as a result of activities such as transport (due to fuels used in transportation services), production of electricity, emissions coming from manufacturing plants, recycling or disposal of some products and vehicles.
Decarbonization Definition and Examples
Decarbonization also referred to as Decarburization is a process which is the opposite of carburization and it means the reduction of carbon content.
Measures to take for decarbonization to occur:
- Reducing the reliance of producing electricity through fossil fuels and adopt clean energy that will decarbonize electricity production
- Ensuring that there is high energy efficiency which in turn helps in reducing the high demand for energy
- Increasing the use of clean energy
- Ensure that the natural ways of absorbing carbon are active, for example increasing the forest cover
To better understand the definition of decarbonization, here are some few examples:
- Power decarbonization – It means reducing the emissions in electricity production
- Metal decarbonization – It means reducing carbon in metals by reacting the carbon with oxygen or hydrogen at temperatures above 70 degrees.
- Use of Renewable energy sources – Using natural clean and renewable energy like solar, wind and water
Benefits of Decarbonization
There are several benefits to decarbonization that people should understand and do their part to help protect the future.
- The cost of energy production will go down
- Less GHG emissions to the environment mean a clean atmosphere with less air pollution and reduced global warming effects
- Reduced carbon levels will mean a healthier population due to fewer effects of carbon emission impacts like acid rain, polluted water air, and soil
- Fewer carbon emissions will reduce the costs we would have to incur to decarbonize in future.
