Energy efficiency is the percentage of total energy input consumed in a useful manner, with minimal loss or no wastage. It typically means cutting down the amount of energy needed to perform a particular action, for example, switching on a light, heating water, or turning on an AC. Energy efficiency is increasingly becoming vital since it has a tremendous effect on our power bills due to the way we consume or potentially waste energy.
Definition of Energy Efficiency and Examples
Energy efficiency means, using less amount of energy or power but still getting the same desired results or output. For example, by changing an old incandescent light bulb and replacing it with an efficient fluorescent lamp, you will be using less power input but getting the same amount of lighting in your room.
Ways of Increasing Energy Efficiency
- Using energy efficient appliances- when purchasing home appliances, buy the ones with fewer energy requirements.
- Insulation- It will ensure that the heat generated in our homes is not lost through walls or the roof, thus reducing energy consumption.

Benefits of Energy Efficiency
Conserving natural resources should be on everyone’s mind. We only have one planet and we share the same home. Do your part to improve the earth’s condition and save our future. There are three main reasons why we should be more energy efficient:
Preserves the Environment
By making better use of the energy we use, it means we will consume less energy and therefore reduce its demand. As a result, we will preserve our natural fuel sources such as fossil fuels, since the power generation plants will not need to produce that much power.
Less consumption of electricity also means less emission of carbon and other greenhouse gases that are provided by power plants and burning of fuels. Do your part in decarbonization with energy efficiency.
Reduced power bills
Consuming less energy in our homes for lighting heating and other electronic appliances means that your electricity bills will go down. Less energy consumption can be achieved by changing those appliances that use more energy and replacing them with less energy consuming ones.
Improving global economy
Using so much power on our day to day lives can have a negative impact on our global economy since it would mean more use of natural resources which are diminishing. The continuous depletion of our natural resources such as oil and natural gases implies that they are becoming more and more expensive thus affecting our industrial activities and economy at large.
