What is Wastewater treatment?
Wastewater treatment is the process which ensures that the wastewater produced from industries is treated to remove any harmful contents before disposal. It ensures that the water is disposed of is safe for the environment, cannot harm the human health and the industries products if it is being reused.
Water waste treatment aims at removing the following contents:
- Nitrates and phosphates which may cause extensive weed growth if released to the environment.
- Pathogens. These include bacteria, viruses, and fungi among other or microorganisms which may cause health issues and diseases.
- Biochemical oxygen demand which is the amount of oxygen dissolved in the water and is required for the aerobic breaking down of the organic matter.
- Metals which usually result from the industrial process.
- Synthetic chemicals
- Total suspended solids which are the organic and inorganic solid material.
- Total dissolved solids. They include onions, salts, minerals, and metals found in the wastewater.
Definition of Waste Water Treatment and Examples
A wastewater treatment system is a system which comprises several different technologies that address specific wastewater treatment needs. The process of treating the wastewater is not static, and therefore the system is made in a way that it can deal with the variations of this process.
Examples of the wastewater treatment process include:
Effluent Treatment Plants
Effluent Treatment Plants (ETP) use evaporation method and other drying techniques to cleanse or treat the wastewater. They also use microscopic filtration in addition to the different ways. They are commonly used by large pharmaceutical and industrial organizations which create chemical spill over in their processes.
Sewage Treatment Plants
Sewage treatment, also known as domestic wastewater treatment, is used to treat wastewater from households’ sewage (both effluents and local). It removes chemical, physical and biological contaminants.
Familiar and Combined Effluent Treatment Plants
CETP’s are formed to help small-scale industries which may not be able to set up individual treatment plants. They are ideal for industrial estates with many small industrial units where there are effluents which needs treatment before disposal.

Benefits of Wastewater Treatment
We must become more efficient with our wastewater treatment. These are the following benefits of wastewater treatment facilities.
- It prevents diseases. Treating the wastewater before disposal or consumption prevents health complications and conditions that can be caused by contaminated water.
- It provides clean water. Due to increased consumption of water, treating the wastewater and recycling it or using it for eating, provides an extra source of freshwater.
- keeps the environment clean. Wastewater treatment protects the environment from the pollution that can cause immense deterioration in the natural resource. It is estimated that one liter of untreated wastewater can pollute 8 liters of freshwater.
- Creation of jobs in the water treatment plants thus growth in the economy.
